Résumé / Abstract : Tous les historiens conviennent de l'importance de la Ferme générale dans le paysage financier et politique de la France d'Ancien régime, et tous déplorent le caractère partiel des connaissances sur cette grande compagnie. Considérée comme un véritable «État dans l'État», elle n'a à ce jour jamais fait l'objet d'une étude globale intégrant tous les enjeux historiques de son activité : enjeux politiques et financiers, économiques et sociaux, culturels enfin, tant il est vrai que la Ferme générale a marqué les représentations mentales aux XVII et XVIII siècle, pendant la Révolution et jusqu'au temps présent. L'ambition de ce carnet de recherches est de saisir la Ferme générale dans sa globalité en appréciant le rapport de l'institution à l'individu. Il part d'une interrogation : la Ferme générale, dénuée des attributs symboliques du pouvoir, mais dotée de moyens de coercition (jugés importants jusqu'à présent), a-t-elle figé un mode de gouvernance arbitraire du territoire et de la société, compris à la fois comme mode rationnel de gestion, et comme processus de civilisation ? Le carnet est d'abord un dictionnaire de la Ferme générale. Il vient combler une lacune bibliographique et scientifique béante, dans la mesure où la communauté ne dispose à ce jour d'aucun ouvrage global de langue française sur le sujet (fre)
Résumé / Abstract : All historians acknowledge the importance of the royal general Farms in the financial and political landscape of the French Old Regime, and all deplore the partial nature of the understanding on this large company. Considered a true “State within a State”, to this day it has never been the subject of a global study integrating all the historical issues involved in its activities: political and financial issues, economic and social issues, even cultural issues, while it is true that the royal general Farms left its impression in the XVII and XVIII centuries, during the French Revolution and to the present day. The ambition of the blog is to understand the royal general Farms in its entirety through appreciating the institutions relationship to the individual. It starts with a question: Did the royal general Farms, stripped of symbolic attributes of power, but bestowed with means of coercion (judged important to this day), set a form of arbitrary governance of the territory and of society, understood both as a rational means of management and as a process of civilisation? The Encyclopaedic Dictionary of the royal general Farms (Dictionnaire encyclopédique de la Ferme générale) will deal with this expectation. They will fill a wide bibliographic and scientific gap, in so far as the community today does not have access to any global work in the French language on the subject. (eng)
