Expositions coloniales -- Belgique
Expositions internationales -- Belgique
Résumé / Abstract : This research calls into question tjhe way in which the colonial experience has been produced and understood mythically in Belgium, with special reference to the official representation of the colony at the many international exhibitions from 1897 to 1958. It also aims at constructing a general theoretical framework and an empirical methodology to turn political myth into a research object. First, a reconstitution of the colonial mythology is produced, a diachronical analysis of the cognitive and emotional significations of the symbolic objects exhibited during the period, putting them in a narrative form, and trying to find out of the structure of this sequence. Second, a dynamical approach is used to focus on the meanings with which the practice of this mythology have been invested by the agents (both the exhibiting political power and the citizens-visitors).
