The exhibition ‘Germany/1920s/New Objectivity/August Sander' attempts to grasp the German zeitgeist at a time of rapid changes in the social, political and media environment that was faced with New questions about technical and social progress. Far from the idealism of the Expressionist generation that was devastated by the First World War, the artists of the German New Objectivity, regardless of discipline, turned their attention to real life and took a precise, distanced look at the outside world and its modern civilisation. Photographer August Sander adopted this same stance in his monumental People of the 20th Century, a comprehensive typological portrait of German society.
