Résumé / Abstract : This book, first published in 1898, recounts an expedition by a British field force to subdue insurrection in a breakaway Indian province. Churchill was a young cavalry officer at that time, temporarily accredited as a war correspondent, largely through the efforts of his mother. The book, Churchill's first, gives promise of the author, war leader and statesman who was to emerge. At a young age he already sparkles with wit, drive, energy and vision. The Churchillian prose, in his beautiful sonorities, is there too. On its release Churchill himself said, "The publication of this book will certainly be the most noteworthy act of my life. By its reputation I shall measure the chances of my possible success in the world." Publisher
