Résumé / Abstract : In road accidents, pedestrian victims increase in France up to 16% in 2004. Pedestrian protection is a real stake in industrial and research context. For example, Automobile industry has to evaluate vehicle front end agressivity against pedestrian. In this way, this work is integrated to the Faurecia Innovation centre for vehicle front end conception. Currently, two main numerical approaches are used in the pedestrian impact biomechanical field: multibody rigid approach and deformable finite element approach. They are complementary but not enough adapted to an industrial context and so they could be optimized in this way. The aim of this work is to develop a numerical lower limb model to evaluate vehicle agressivity against pedestrians. The first step was to evaluate the two currently used approaches on two different stages. On the one hand, main features of pedestrian impact were determined to include them in the new model developement. On the other hand, limits and advantages are estimated for each approach in industrial context. So, a third approach called “hybrid” has been defined. It corresponds to a rigid model with finite element solving. The “Hybrid” model is derivate from on an existing deformable leg model and reproduces its kinematics and its injuries criteria in a lateral impact configuration. This model predicts the injury intra-articular risk of the two main ligaments injured in pedestrian accidents: the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament. Then, we have evaluated and validated this new model on concrete applications to check its adaptability to an industrial environment.
