Résumé / Abstract : This thesis explains the behaviour of banks in their internationalization process. Two essential points are studied: the choice of the form of establishment abroad and the performance carried out abroad. Choosing a form such as the representative office, the branch, the affiliated bank or the subsidiary company is a strategic choice which determines the degree of influence of the parent-bank on the activities undertaken abroad. In the same way, the performance carried out abroad will depend on the implication’s level of the head office in the management of their foreign establishments. To illustrate this empirically, we tested two econometric models: the first one is related to the explanation of the choice of the representation form of a bank and the second concerns the performance determinants of the subsidiary companies and the affiliated banks. The results indicate that the organisational characteristics of the parent-bank are explanatory factors of its internationalization policy. Also, the share of the capital held by the parent-bank (as capacity of implication in the management and in the organization of its representations abroad) explains more the performance.
