Résumé / Abstract : The aim of this work was to improve the understanding of corona discharge and triboelectricity as charging mechanisms for granular materials in view of their electrostatic separation. A first set of experiments shown that the electric charge of insulating particles is influenced by the manner in which they are distributed on the surface on an electrode affected by an ionized field. Other experiments, concerning the tribocharging of particles in different vibratory devices, pointed out the effects of three factors: amplitude of vibration, duration of treatment, and state of surfaces in contact. The third part of the study was carried out on insulating powders, using the response surface method of experimental design, in order to obtain an empirical model of the charge process and find its optimum. These researches lead to the development of a procedure for classifying abrasive materials and to the improvement of existing methods of insulation/metal separation from industrial wastes.
