Résumé / Abstract : Considering the intercultural encounter as a field for anthropological observation, the thesis proposes a rereading of the representations of Sino-Western relations from the end of the Renaissance up to today. The aim is to break away from linear thought and dualistic perspective that represent China and the West as two crystallised and incompatible blocks. In order to do so, a dynamic and feedback approach in terms of "crossfields" is elaborated through the fieldwork of the author. Through a disenchantment of culturalist perspective, focus is put on the complexity and on the transculturality of the perception of intercultural encounters. Awareness is raised to the spatio-temporal situation of the encounter, to its historicity in which agents are embedded and play their roles of "in-betweens"; raised to the configuration of signs referring to interpretation, to identification, to differentiation or to ritual strategy; also raised to the feedback processes as intertwined loops which necessarily locate the "crossfields" in the grey zone between turbulence and order. The author founds her analysis on three important postulates : a) culture is a process of specific construction of meanings, thus evolutionary and not essential, b) the fundamental values and the interests of humanity are recognised everywhere and by everyone, c) exchanges between civilisations since antiquity have allowed to engender "trans-heritages" which belong to the whole of humanity. She suggests a sense of practice and an aesthetic approach in order to enhance our sensorial and potential capacities in transcultural understanding.
