Résumé / Abstract : Throughout the twentieth century, the unusual pictorial medium used by some artists has contributed to a drastic change in concepts. Today, in a quest for the unexpected, medium and pictorial expression integrate and merge. This study will analyze to what extent the medium absorbs the work of art in a dynamic way and is at the same time a source for creative motivation and an aesthetic incentive. A typology of the medium and a poll have been carried out to understand in depth the innovative interest of the use of the unexpected for some artists and how the public reacts to the work of art. The purpose then is to identify pictorial media as unusual ones, offer a more extensive typology, suggest the approriate conditions for the creaction of the unexpected and understand more clearly the reactions of the viewer when confronted to the unusual medium. The classification of unusual media helps to understand the different trends and to identify the works of art and artists who have contributed, in their way, to the evolution of pictorial language. The purpose of the presentation of the works of art is to underline the originality of the media rather than insist on the artists and artistic trends that mainly help to set landmarks. The personal plastic experience of the use of unexpected material as a pictorial medium is presented in the second part. Next the answers to the poll carried out on two works will be interpreted and presented with graphs.
