Résumé / Abstract : IF I HAVE TO DEFINE IN ONE PHRASE THE POINTS OF CONVERGENCE OF ALL THE STUDIES GATHERED IN THIS THESIS (WHICH ENDEAVOURS TO SET ON NEW BASES THE MOST CLASSICAL PROBLEM OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN MAN AND HIS WORKS), I SHALL SAY THAT THEY SEE LITERARY WRITING AS THE COMPLEX AND PRIVILEGED EXPRESSION OF AN IMPOSSIBLE IDENTITARY RECOLLECTION BY THE SUBJECT. WHEREAS THE CLASSIC RELATION BETWEEN MAN AND HIS WORKS ALWAYS TENDS TO EXPRESS A FULFILMENT (IN SO FAR AS THE AUTHOR IS CONCEIVED AS A CONSTITUTED AND COMPLETED IDENTITY, WHICH IS CONSCIOUS AND AUTONOMOUS), MY STUDIES CONSIDER WRITING AS A DIFFICULT NEGOCIATION WITH A CONSTITUTIVE DEFICIENCY (A DISCREPANCY, A BREACH) WHICH WILL IN NO WAY BE SUBLIMATED BY THE WORKS. SUCH A CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE CONFERS UNITY UPON THIS STUDY WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY COMPOSED OF THREE MAIN ENSEMBLES - EACH DEVOTED TO A SINGLE AUTHOR - WHICH ARE COMPLEMENTED BY TWO CONSTELLATIONS OF ARTICLES ALSO EMPHASIZING THE LINKS BETWEEN A WRITER AND HIS WORKS. 1 LOTI'S TOMB. WHERE IT IS SHOWN THAT ALL THE WORKS OF PIERRE LOTI CONSIST IN THE CONSTANT ENVELOPPING OF A FOUNDING LOSS: A CONSTANTLY MUMMIFYING WRITING INASMUCH AS IT COR- RESPONDS TO A CENOTAPHIC ANGUISH. SO THAT THE WRITER'S IDENTITY WILL ALWAYS REMAIN UNTRACEABLE INSOFAR AS IT WILL BE NOTHING BUT THE MISSING CORPSE OF HIS OWN LITERARY MONUMENT. 2 PROUST AND HIS LETTERS. WHERE IT IS SHOWN THAT WITH PROUST THE RELATIONS WITH OTHERS DEPEND ON LETTERS: THERE IS NO BEARABLE PROXIMITY BUT IN THE SEPARATION OF AN EPISTOLARY DISTANCE. ONLY REMOTENESS LITERALLY ALLOWS INTIMACY. SIMULTANEOUS AT ITS CLOSEST AND AT ITS FAR- THEST, SUCH IS THE FUNDAMENTAL POSTURE OF PROUST'S WRITING, WHOSE FOUNDING RITE IS THE POSTAL EXCHANGE. SUCH A PARADOXAL POSTURE MUST DESTABILIZE PROUST'S IDENTITY. 3 SARTRE'S UGLINESS. WHERE IT IS SHOWN THAT SARTRE, INSOFAR AS HE DEEMS HIMSELF UGLY, WILL NEVER ACHIEVE A TRUE IDENTITARY ACKNOLEDGEMENT OF HIS OWN FACE. THIS IMPOSSIBILITY WILL CONDITION ALL THE RELATIONS OF SARTRE WITH THE VISIBLE AND THE IMAGE, TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT HIS AESTHETIC TEXTS WILL AIM LESS AT REVEALING THAT AT CONCEALING THE VISIBLE.
