Résumé / Abstract : The population explosion of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is undoubtedly and important element in the Industrial Revolution. For a long time, however, it has resisted the efforts of historians to explain it satisfactorily. Professor Flinn examines the statistical sources and methods on which interpretations past and present have been based and goes on to review critically the explanations of the growth of population that have been put forward. In a final section he analyses the implications of recent work for the study of the Industrial Revolution. -4e de couv.
