Résumé / Abstract : Lively and innovative, German theatre has continuously attracted great interest also outside German-speaking countries where German plays are being performed to a much greater extent than at any time since the late Weimar years. They appear to represent, yet again, something that can be construed as prototypically German, something horrendous and fascinating at the same time and, in its impact, not unlike the radical experiments which characterised the stage works of the Weimar era. Though some of the playwrights mentioned in this volume have by now received a good deal of critical attention, the wider scene has remained largely unexplored and the real questions thrown up by the new German theatre have scarcely been identified. This comprehensive survey, the first one of its kind in English, addresses some of the major issues; it offers up-to-date information on the state of German theatre and introduces the most important playwrights currently working in East and West Germany. Of particular interest is the case study of the work of Peter Stein, whose productions for the Berliner Schaubühne have met with international acclaim.
